Upaasana significa buscar la cercanía de lo Divino. Upaasana a menudo se hace equivaler al ayuno. Esto no es correcto. Cuando uno está inmerso en la bienaventuranza del Brahmananda(dicha o arrobamiento divino), uno renunciará por sí solo al alimento. Esto constituye el verdadero Upaasana. El someterse al ayuno como régimen obligatorio no es Upaasana, sino mera inanición. Por ejemplo, el mantenerse despierto durante la noche de Shivarathri viendo películas o jugando a las cartas, es una caricatura de la sagrada vigilia que se espera que uno observe en esa ocasión. La experiencia de la Bienaventuranza Divina no habrá de ser alcanzada a través del dominio de variadas prácticas espirituales. Únicamente cuando el corazón se ha purificado, puede uno tomar consciencia de la divinidad. No hay cabida para la divinidad en un corazón lleno de egoísmo, orgullo y odio.

Upaasana means approaching near the Divine. Upaasana is often equated with fasting. This is not correct. When one is immersed in the bliss of Brahma-ananda (divine bliss of rapture), one gives up food of one's own accord. This constitutes true Upaasana. To subject oneself to fasting as a compulsory regimen is not Upaasana, but mere starvation. For instance, to keep awake on Shivaraathri night by watching films or playing cards is a caricature of the sacred vigil that one is expected to observe at that time. The experience of Divine Bliss is not to be achieved by the mastery of various spiritual practices. It is only when the heart is purified that divinity can be realized. There is no room for divinity in a heart filled with egoism, pride and hatred.

 Chithoor Nagayya, el reconocido actor y devoto de Swami, estaba junto a Swami y estaba traduciendo su discurso al tamil. El público estaba fascinado y disfrutaba de las palabras de Bhagavan. De repente, un bebé pequeño, de apenas un año y en el regazo de su madre, comenzó a llorar fuertemente. Todos los ojos se volvieron hacia el bebé que lloraba, para saber, cual era la causa de su perturbación. Pasaron unos segundos. Todo el mundo vio a Swami en el estrado con una suave sonrisa. Él extendió su mano abierta hacia el niño que llora en modo 'abhaya " , pero de repente cerró el puño! Ese mismo momento, el niño se quedó en silencio. Nadie podía saber la razón por la cual el bebé repentinamente comenzó a llorar y el por qué, también de repente, dejó de llorar. Swami extendió el puño cerrado hacia Nagayya ahora, lo abrió y dijo: "Una pequeña moneda de 25 paisas se quedó atascado en la garganta de ese pequeño bebé y la he quitado. ¡Aquí está!" Sri Nagayya fue superado por completo por las emociones o la sorpresa y la felicidad, y de inmediato lo anunció por el micrófono. El público extasiado estalló en aplausos. Kalyana Mandapam in Madras, now of Course Chennai. Thousands of eager devotees had gathered to have His darshan and to hear His inspiring words. His divine form filled them with bliss. After giving Darshan, Swami spoke in Telugu. Chithoor Nagayya, the celebrated actor and devotee of Swami, was standing by Swami and was translating His discourse into Tamil. The audience was spellbound and enjoying every word of Bhagawan. Suddenly, a small baby, barely a year old and lying in his mother's lap, began to wail loudly. All eyes turned towards the crying baby who was the cause of the disturbance. A few seconds passed. Everyone saw Swami on the dais gently smiling. He extended his open palm towards the crying child in the 'abhaya' mode , but suddenly closed it into a tight fist! That very moment, the child fell silent. None could gauge the reason why the baby suddenly started wailing and why he, equally suddenly, stopped crying. Swami extended the closed fist now towards Nagayya, opened it and said, "A small 25-paise coin got stuck in that little baby's throat and I have removed it. Here it is!" Sri Nagayya was completely overcome by emotions or surprise and happiness and immediately announced it over the microphone. The enraptured audience exploded into wild applause. Even though the little baby was right in her own lap, the poor mother did not know what had gone wrong with her child. It is obvious that, more than even one's own mother, God is much, very much, closer.
