Ghandi, quien era una persona común y corriente, pudo lograr grandeza y renombre mundial debido a las lecciones de buen comportamiento que recibió de su madre. Ella cumplía una promesa: no tomar su desayuno antes de que el cucú cantara en la mañana. En una ocasión, cuando Ghandi era un niño, su madre estuvo esperando un largo tiempo oír la llamada del cucú. Observando esto, Ghandi salió de la casa, imitó el canto del cucú y regresó diciendo a su madre que el ave había cantado y que ya podía tomar su desayuno. La madre - que se había percatado de la triquiñuela de su hijo - lo abofeteó en la mejilla y le dijo: "¡Niño pícaro ! ¿Qué pecado habré cometido para tener un hijo como tú ?", sintiéndose muy triste. Su pesar llegó al corazón de Gandhi, que a partir de ese momento tomó la firme resolución de nunca volver a decir una mentira.

“Gandhi, que era uma pessoa comum, foi capaz de alcançar grandeza e renome mundial por causa das lições de bom comportamento que ele aprendeu com sua mãe. Ela observava um voto: ela se alimentaria somente após o cuco cantar pela manhã. Uma vez, quando Gandhi era um menino, sua mãe estava esperando por um longo tempo para ouvir o chamado do cuco. Percebendo isso, Gandhi saiu de casa, imitou o chamado do cuco e entrou e disse à mãe que o cuco tinha cantado e que ela poderia se alimentar. A mãe, que enxergou através dos truques de seu filho, lhe deu um tapa no rosto e disse: "Seu rapaz mau! Que pecado eu devo ter cometido para ter um filho como você?" Ela se sentiu muito triste. Sua dor tocou o coração de Gandhi. A partir desse momento, Gandhi tomou uma firme decisão de nunca proferir uma mentira novamente.”

Gandhi, who was an ordinary person, was able to achieve greatness and world renown, because of the lessons in good behavior he learnt from his mother. The mother observed a vow: she would take her food only after the cuckoo sang in the morning. Once when Gandhi was a boy, the mother was waiting for a long time to hear the call of the cuckoo. Observing this, Gandhi went out of the house, imitated the call of the cuckoo and came in and told his mother that the cuckoo had sung and that she could take her food. The mother, who saw through her son's trickery, slapped him on the cheek and said, "You wicked fellow! What sin must I have committed to bear a son like you?" She felt very sad. Her grief touched the heart of Gandhi. From that moment Gandhi took a firm resolve never to utter a lie again.
